Do you reckon Mo Farah would ever say to Usian Bolt, ‘why do you only work on strength and sprinting and not long distance?’
First of all, this is not me having a go at the person who asked this question, it’s a great question!!
But instead of me giving you scientific, biological reasons as to why I don’t train with heavy weights, I’m going to give you the blunt but beneficial truth.
I FIND NO ENJOYMENT IN LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS.
My passion right from the start of my career as a PT has been to teach people that there is no one size to fitness. Everyone is different and finding something that gives you satisfaction and happiness is the most important thing!
Why?
If you enjoy it, you will want to keep doing it. Consistency is so much more effective than a certain once a week workout that you hate.
There is no ‘best’ routine that suits everyone.
Weight loss, fat burning, working out, calorie deficit, building muscle, whatever it is you want to achieve/do has to be by doing something you enjoy.
If you go to the gym, lift double your body weight and leave feeling just the same here’s a sign to find a new way to move your body.
Many people say I do too much HIIT or that I should lift heavier, gain more muscle, grow a booty and my response to them is simply ‘why?’
Is it because that is just what you ‘should’ be doing?
I don’t care that my bum doesn’t create a nice lil’ silhouette in my shadow. What I do care about feeling satisfied, fulfilled and proud of myself after a workout.
Don’t get me wrong, I encourage lifting some weights to help improve balance, posture and over all strength however if this really isn’t your jam and you prefer running outside, go outside, go for run.
Blimey, there are many people in this world that eat McDonalds for breakfast 4 times a week, consume more Red Bull than water and move less than a sloth with long covid.
So, let this be a message of encouragement and reward.
YOU ARE DOING JUST FINE.
In fact if you are active 3-5 times a week, you’re smashing it, whether you lift weights or not!
Whatever type of exercise you enjoy the most, be it rowing, cycling, running, riding, rock climbing, HIIT classes, yoga or my brutal Indoor Cardio, let that be your happy place.
Stop putting too much pressure on yourself to have THE PERFECT balance of strength, cardio and HIIT because there is no perfect!
